A winter weekend to remember at Summerplace

LCC hosted another fantastic weekend at Summerplace Game Reserve over the weekend of 31 May-2 June. A total of 23 riders (plus a few family members) descended on the reserve, just over two hours from Pretoria in the Waterberg, for an amazing weekend of FUNtastic riding, scrumptious food, helpful skills clinics, luxurious accommodation and great company.

On Friday afternoon the early birds were able to enjoy a chilled one-hour ride, followed by dinner with the whole group at which the next morning’s activities were planned (around the needs of the group).

After a lekker pre-ride brekkie, Markus (https://coachm-multisport.com/mtb-skills/) our Coach then did some basic skills drills with the whole group. Jim then took a group on the Red Route for a two-hour ride while the rest did more skills before heading out to find some game (Eland, Roan, Sable and Giraffes were on the ‘menu’).

A super-sized brunch was waiting upon everyone’s return and, with full stomachs, some headed for the couch/bed while others honed some very specific skills with Markus.

The afternoon ‘sundowner’ ride proved a little more challenging than expected as a completely new (Orange) route was longer than anticipated.  Then, with snacks and drinks consumed, some of the group headed home with lights on whilst others returned on the back of the bakkie. The evening chef-braaied meat with delicious sides and dessert replenished the energy burned during the afternoon (we actually ate more than we burned – it’s #ASummerplaceThing).

Sunday’s morning ride (after the mandatory pre-ride breakfast) included two groups. One did the Green route and the rest rode the amazing Grey route. When we got back to the Trail-head, the chef had prepared another huge Brunch and people sat around the tables with new friends they had made over the weekend, shared trail stories, game sightings, scored the trails (all 5/5) and again ate far more than was necessary (it was so good).

Reluctantly the group then bade their farewells and started to splinter as people headed back to the city.

Unfinished Business: There were still two trails that Jim had not ridden on the weekend and so on Sunday afternoon he solo’d the Marula (and new Marula+) route and on Monday morning he did the Aloes and the remainder of the Orange (not ridden on Saturday evening), His only comment was that all the new trails did was add to the already superb trail network.

A huge thank you to Simone (and Dave – in his absence – he was at Berg and Bush) and the whole Summerplace team for a brilliant weekend.

Our next Club Weekend is at Summerplace Game Reserve from 13-15 September. Watch all our club social media for the advert for this and book early to avoid disappointment (and get the best price too).

Summerplace is the place to ride this summer (also winter and spring and autumn).
